Description
The figure in this piece is an internationally renowned Filipino tattoo artist, Whang-Od, who is 103 years old and the last tattoo artist to practice the traditional styles of her ethnic group. The blue and red colours, along with the sun across the upper body, are inspired by elements of the Filipino flag. The red and blue sections of our national flag are meant to represent whether the country is in a state of peace or war. If the flag is positioned with the red portion on top, the country is at war; if the blue is on top of the red, we are at peace.
Right now, my home country is at war within itself. The government versus the people. The many innocent lives taken by the hands of the government and the violation of basic human rights weighs heavily on my heart. Additionally, traditional Filipino culture is continually being washed out by Western culture and values, first through colonization and second through globalization. This piece was created as an expression of my perspective on these issues.
